The Frankopan family was a Croatian noble family that had a huge impact on Croatian history. They originated from the island of Krk and the memory of their lives can be seen today inside the Frankopan castle, located in Kamplin Square. Inside the castle grounds, you’ll find the well preserved castle walls and three towers.

The castle was used for defense purposes and as a residence to the Frankopan family.

Walking along the castle’s wall you’ll discover unique stone monolithic structures known as Liburnian cippus – a gravestone that date from the Roman times.

The history of this castle is very intertwined with the history of the city of Krk. The Frankopan family was very religious and inside the cathedral you can see their family chapel. The family inspired the creation of one of the most popular sweets on the island, the irresistible cake Krčka kneginja (the Krk princess). Be sure to try it in one of the local patisseries or cafes.

If you enjoy experiencing life in medieval Krk, we recommend you visit the city between 8th to 10th August and participate in the medieval Krk fair. The fair is held every year at the same time, during which time the city recreates what life would have been like in Frankopan times.
