Along the Golden Drops of Krk Treasure
Something should also be said about the interesting thematic walking paths dedicated to Krk’s liquid treasure – olive oil. Thematic walking path Along the Golden Drops of Krk Treasure is recommended to all those who love walking through nature.
There are two paths, which are moderately demanding, whilst visitors are told the story of island agriculture, about olives, medicinal herbs and everything that they are likely to encounter while walking there. The paths are not overly demanding, and are 9.5 and 12.5 km long passing through the olive groves around the villages of Kornić and Vrh.
The Karst Pond Walking Trail of the Island of Krk
On the island of Krk there are more than 300 larger ponds. In the waterless karst terrain, ponds are an unexpected phenomenon which lends the landscape a particular charm. This trail leads through a mainly wooden and rural part of the island of Krk, known as Šotovento. It passes through the double pond of Ormatine, located next to the exceptional natural attractions – ancient downy oaks in the Dolinji Drmun area. Next stop is the ponds of Menkova in the village of Poljica and two living ponds named Živa (one pond was as a source of drinking water for people, while the other was for the livestock).
The trail runs through a forest and it is easy to walk along. Length of trail: 6.1 km, duration 2 hours
Glagolitic trail
Alphabet is undoubtedly one of the key foundations of civilization. Two monks, Saints Cyril and Methodius, who were sent by the Byzantine emperor to spread the gospel among the pagans of Central and Eastern Europe in the 9th century where well aware of that fact. To make sure that Christianity really took hold they devised a new alphabet – Glagolitic script. Using geometric shapes and theological symbolism the Glagolitic script has for centuries been an integral part of cultural heritage at Kvarner Islands, especially Krk.
The oldest historical record, from 1105 AD, written in the Croatian language is the Baška Tablet, carved in stone. This unique historical document inspired the creation of the Glagolitic trail.
