Ethno Heritage

The Two-part Singing and Playing

The Two-part Singing and Playing is a complex style of folk music specific for the area of island Krk, Croatian Littoral and Istria. The Two-part Singing and Playing is a characteristic color of tone achieved in vocal music by powerful singing, partly through the nose. This kind of singing is listed at the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

This kind of singing is often accompanied by the traditional folk instrument “sopile” – ancient wind instrument. The Two-part Singing and playing “sopile” can be seen today in the traditional summer Festival of Krk folklore and in other island festivities. Learn more about it in this short movie about “sopile” and “Two-part Singing”.

Folklore & Culture Associations

The rich folklore tradition and heritage of the island Krk has been preserved thanks to the efforts of local folklore associations. “Krkčki tanac” is a traditional dance at the island Krk that is accompanied by the traditional wind instrument “sopile”. The dancers are dressed in traditional folk costumes. This traditional dance is performed by the local folk associations on local festivities and other cultural events.

The oldest folklore association on the island Krk is Town Music Krk founded in 1832. Town Music Krk is a musical ensemble that consists of brass instruments.
