Ancient ruins in Volsonis cafe bar

Cafe bar Volsonis is located inside the Perossi house and is known as a valuable archaeological site. The ancient walls from the 4th century AD and other archeological artefacts were found during excavations in the 21st century. The most interesting artefact is the Altar of Venus, dedicated to the Roman goddess of love.

If you choose to visit Volsonis you can walk along the ancient underground corridors and gardens where many tombstones (along with the previously mentioned altar) were found. One tombstone has the name Volson carved on it, who was one of the Roman rulers of Krk and the cafe bar was then named after him.

Temple Of Venus

The remains of the ancient Temple of Venus can be seen inside the shop Memento, in the old town centre of Krk. The remains of the temple can bee seen through the glass floor inside the shop.

Venus was the Roman goddess of love, beauty and marriage. In the Roman Empire the number of temples dedicated to Venus was significantly less when compared with temples built for other Roman gods. Therefore, this temple which dates back to the 1st century BC, is the only temple dedicated to the goddess Venus on the eastern side of the Adriatic (from Greece to Italy), making it even more spectacular.
